EAST COAST FLOODS.
HEAVY RAIN AT GISBORNE. EARLIER THREAT OF DROUGHT (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.; GISBORNE, this day. There was a threat of drought in Gisborne until the last few days in January, but this week the district has experienced conditions which indicated the possibility of floods. Heavy rain commenced on Saturday night and continued almost without interruption until yesterday afternoon, the fall for the month to date being nearly five inches, compared with February's average of 3.46 in. The only inconvenience caused by the abnormal rainfall, however, was the temporary dislocation of road services on the east coast by the flooding of creeks between Tokomaru Bay and Tuatoria, and also the subsidence of the road near Tokomaru, where the road is reported to have been lowered two or three feet owing to the subsidence of a hillside, holding up traffic for some time. By yesterday afternoon, however, conditions were restored almost to normal. The rain has been or great benefit to the whole district and will go a v long way towards checking the decline of dairy production which set in last month.
