WORK AT ELLERSLIE.

A QUIET MORNING.

CHIEF COOK AND COURTHAVEN.

No. 2 grass track was available for fast work at Ellerslie this morning, while horses with engagements at Matamata had the use of the course proper, on which the poles were 25ft out from the rails. The going was in first class order, but there was not a great deal of fast work accomplished. The Course Proper. Courthaven and Ornamental were companions over six furlongs, the former doing best in 1.20 4-5, the first three furlongs being covered in 40 l-ss. Both these horses are in good order, and leave for Matamata to-morrow. Chief Cook did strong work over a round, being accompanied over ,the last five furlongs by Timorous. He completed the distance in 2.11 1-5, and covered the last six furlongs in 1.17 4-5, and the final five in 1.4. Timorous, who was a length or two behind her companion when they jumped away, was timed to run her five furlongs in 1.4 3-5. Chief Cook leaves for Matamata to-morrow to contest the Walton Handicap, in which he will be ridden by A. J. Parsons. Mountain Breeze jumped off at the eixfnrlonjf post, running the first three furlongs in 41 3-ss, and completing his tatk in 1.19 2-5. No. 2 Grass. Horotiu, Darma, and Horowhenua were timed to run five furlongs in 1.5 1-5, the first-mentioned pair showing to most advantage at the finish. Zane Grey strode over a round, but was not after time, averaging about 15s to the furlong. Qleriromney worked alone over six furlongs, which he covered in 1.17 4-5, the last half mile taking 53 1-5. On the Tan. Supreme Ruler and Chief Emerald were given strong work on the tan, but were not extended. Kilmtiir, Wee Pat, and I'atutahi also did useful work. My Money and Barn Dance were timed to run their last half mile in 57 2-ss. Gay Broney was going comfortably throughout six furlongs in 1.27 2-5. He leaves for Matamata jtuinorrow to contest the Hack Cup, in which he will be ridden by R. McTavish. The Jumpers.

Bright Flower (F. Baker) and Tenakoe (Williame) were schooled, twice over the pony hurdles, giving a satisfactory display. This pair also did serviceable work on the tan track. v. Riding Engagements. The following riding engagemente are announced for the Matamata meeting: — A. J. Parsons, Lapstone, Chief Cook, Barograph, and Ornamental; R. McTavish, Gay Broney and Square Acre; E. Keesiug King Mestor, L. Clifford, Ballymorey.
