PIECE OF GREENSTONE.
EXCAVATED IN AUCKLAND,
A piece of greenstone, in the possession of Mr. John W. Bissett, of Blockhouse Bay, was found close to the centre of Auckland. Some years ago, during the excavations preliminary to the construction of a building in Albert Street, the greenstone came to light amongst stones and rubbish, and Mr. Bissett's son, although informed by one of tlio carters that it was "rubbish," and of no value, took it home to add to his collection of curios.
The greenstone piece weighs 321b, and is 13in long. The top and front have been sawn, and the beauty of the stone revealed. It appears to have been polished on one side. The largest of the adzes which have been photographed with the greenstone is 13in long and 3Jlb in weight. It is made of North of Auckland greystone. There is also a whalebone implement used by sailors for untying rope knots. It was dug out of a Maori camping ground at New Brighton, Christehurch, about 20 years ago.
