S. Wliiteliorn, of Bayswater, is leaving on Saturday to attend the Waitangi celebrations. Her brothers, Messrs. Selwyn and Percy Simeon, arc accompanying her. Mrs. Wliitehorn is a granddaughter of the Rev. William Colenso, who was present at the signing of the Treaty, and her grandmother, who was, before lier marriage a Miss Elizabeth Fairburn, was a teacher in the Maori school there. * • • • Appreciation of the work done for Birkenhead by Mrs. William Wallace, a former Mayoress, and by Mrs. Helen Gilpin, widow of Mr. F. A. Gilpin, a former member of the Borough Council, was expressed at the meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Cotmcil last evening by the chairman, Mr. Albert Hadfield. He said the deaths of these two ladies was greatly regretted. The members of the council stood in silent tributo to the memory of the two deceased, whose relatives are to be forwarded letters conveying the sympathy of the council, and of the residents of Birkenhead.
