GROUNDLESS RUMOUR.
British Pressure Put on
Austria.
COMPLAINT TO LEAGUE,
(British Official Wlrelesi.) (Received 1 p.m.) RUGBY, January 30. Questioned regarding the situation in Austria, the Lord Privy Seal, Mr. Anthony Eden, said the Austrian Minister had recently informed the Foreign Secretary, Sir John Simon, of representations made by the Austrian Government to Berlin in which the possibility is mentioned of an eventual appeal by Austria to the League of Nations. So far as he knew, no reply had yet been made by the German Government to these representations. No further statement could therefore be made at present.
Further questioned as to the rumour that the British Government had discouraged the Austrian Government from bringing the matter before the League Council, Mr. Eden said, "I had heard that rumour and I am glad to take this opportunity of stating that there is no truth in it whatever."
