WOOL VALUES.
SOUTHLAND SALE.
FINE QUALITY IN DEMAND.
COARSE LOTS SUCGHTIiY LOWER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCAEGILL, this day.. The first Invefcargill wool sale of the season opened this morning. There was a full, representative bench of buyer*, and the catalogue comprised over 30,000
bales. For the opening catalogue bidding was slow, but it appeared particularly sound in all half'breds and line wools. Medium crossbreds showed a slight easing, 3d a lb, while very coarse grades of crossbred were easier, in some cases to the extent of Jd. Pieces, bellies and locks met excellent competition, and prices were quite up to Ohristchurch parity. Prices of cru takings if anything exceeded the values ruling in Christchurch.
Of the first catalogue fully 95 per cent was sold under the hammer, and in most cases the vendors realised 100 per cent, and in some cases 200 per cent more than they received for similar clips last year. European and Japanese buyers seemed to be setting the pace.
Values have improved considerably since the opening of the Dominion sales, and though a slight easing was shown in coarser crossbreeds, Southland growers benefited as much as northern ones, except in the case of certain low lines of farmers* crossbred wools.
The outstanding feature- of the sale before noon was the high, values ruling for finer grade pieces, which in a good many cases exceeded the values obtained for lleece. In the opinion of buyers the Southland clip is a good one, and there is general comment that the "get up" this year compares more than favourably with that of past seasons.
The top price in the morning was 23Jd for line Corriedale ewe wool from the Five Rivers district. This wool has obtained top price for the last ten years. First pieces of this clip realised 21d, second 20d.
