N.Z. FLAX PLANTS.
OBJECTION TO EXPORT,
COMPETITION FORESEEN.
(By Telegraph. —Press Association.)
PALMEBSTON N., this day.
In Tiew of the fact that 40,000 New Zealand flax plants are to be shipped to Japan from the Waikato, and a further 10,000 plants are expected to go later, strong representations are being made that the Government should immediately prevent the export of the plants or seed. The commercial possibility of New Zealand fibre being exported has long been recognised by experts in overseas countries, and despite the repeated efforts of tire New Zealand Flaxmillers Association to induce.; the Government to take action, immense quantities of both fibre and. seed have been exported from time to time. It is not generally known that plants of phormium teriax are already established in certain overseas countries. Action to prevent their export is considered long overdue, and it is stated that unless drastic action is taken by the Government the New Zealand industry will be faced with, serious competition from overseas .countries employing cheap coloured labour.
