LURE OF SAIL.
CROWD VISITS BARQUE. INTEREST IN WINDJAMMER. On Regatta Day the King's wharf is one or the most popular "Aberdeen grandstands" for the view of the boats on the Waitemata. To-day the wharf provided a.n extra attraction for the public. Hundreds of people took the opportunity of a' close-up view of the large German barque, Magdaleue Yinnen.
Yesterday the four-masted windjammer was open for public inspection, and no • restriction was placed on the hundreds of people who availed themselves of the opportunity of seeing one of the largest and most modern sailing vessels afloat. From stem to stern the visitors swarmed over the ship, chatting to the German officers and crew, most of whom have an excellent knowledge of English. All conversations with the. ship's company seemed to lead eventually to inquiries about the new Nazi regime. The topic is more in the public mind, as one officer remarked, than when the vessel was here in February hist year. At that time Herr Hitler had not attained power. The Nazi flag flown on tho Magdalene Vinnen was of interest to the visitors, and the crew received \ with grave good humour the "formal"! greetings of many small boys who hailed them with upraised arm. The neatness and cleanliness of the ship was a feature which pleased sightseers, and the naval uniforms of the cadets was another point of smartness. Several German residents of the city were aboard the ship, and groups could be seen here and there conversing earnestly in the native tongue. Other visitors came by car from the country to view the rare sight of the
largo sailing vessel yesterday, and more arrived this morning, drawn by the lure of sail not only to the Magdalene Vinnen, but to enjoy the refreshing charm of the hundreds of pleasure craft in the harbour. All the ships in port are dressed in bunting in acknowledgment of the regatta.
