Tennis Finals.
DULCIE NICHOLLS W*NS. Andrews and Malfroy.—Crowd at Stanley Street. An Auckland crowd lias never seen New Zealand's present tennis stars, E. D. Andrews and C. E. Malfroy opposed to each other, and for that reason StanIcy Street's naileries were crowded for the finals of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's championship tournament to-day. Finals in other events were ako set down for decision, and the crowd which went along in anticipation of a tennis feast were fully satisfied. A light breeze, which blew across the courts did not interfere with play and relieved considerably what would have been an oppressive heat. Even so, it was trying tennis weather.
Miss Marjorie Macfarlane v. Miss Nicholls. Repeated mistakes on the part of Mies Nicholls gave Miss Macfarlane a two-game lead over Miss Nicholls. Both hit hard and cleanly for a start, but Miss Maefailanc's shots had better length and far more accuracy. When Miss Macfarlane had a 3—l lead, Miss Nicholls beian to use cut shots, hoping to break her opponent's accuracy. She drew up to 4 —3, 4-all, and then drew a game 1 ahead. Thereon the Wellingtonlan dropped the cut shots, and hit hard again, but varied her game with slow, high, bouncing shots. Holding now to a better length, she made last year's Auckland champion run, and kept her running, so that she did not lose another game in the first set, Miss Nicholls taking it o—4. The Wellingtonifin carried on her superiority convincingly into the early stages of the second set, running straight away to a three-love lead, taking the third game, Miss Macfarlane's service, with the less of only one point. Tn the next game Miss Nicholls varied her shots again, so that her opponent could not set going, and she won that, too. she had won eight games in a run. The next game Miss Macfarlane took, forcing her opponent into error* when the Wellington girl came into the net. iShe broke through the service of Miss Nicholls, who lost the crucial point at 30 40, by missing an easy backhand smash. A double-fault, when it was vantage out on her own service Inst Miss Macfarlane the next same, and Miss Nicliolls. rnnnincr to a 40—15 lead on her own service, aced the 1933 champion, to win the next service, game and match, o—4, o—2.
