POLICE RAIDS.
SEVENTEEN ARRESTS. ILLEGAL GAMING ALLEGED. ACCUSED MEN BAILED. There was some excitement in the city shortly before noon to-day when four simultaneous raids on different premises were carried out by detectives, who arrested seventeen men.
The fact that races are being held today at Thames no doubt had something to do with the surprise visits by the police. Detectives Moore and Gillum arrested Henry .Clifton Sallery on a charge of using the premises as a common gaming house. Eight men found on the premises were also taken into custody. While this raid was in progress, Detective Brady and Constable Surgenor visited an office in another building and arrested George Geelong Paul on a, similar charge, also one man for being found on the premises. At a third building Jack Gilbert Hooper was arrested by Detectives Stevenson and Mahood on a gaming house charge. In a shop in Quay Street, about the same time, Detectives Hayes and Constable Julian arrested four men for being found on the .premises, and Martin Joseph O'Connor, the latter being charged with using the premises as a common gaming house. The police station presented a busy scene, as the preparation of the cliarge sheets and bail bonds for each man took considerable time. Mr. Ernest A. Craig, J.P., was summoned, and in a small room at the detective office a court was declared open, Detective Serjeant A. G. MeHugli appearing for the police.
Shortly before 2 o'clock the men were allowed to leave, each with blue documents —his bail bond, in his hands. All were remanded to appear in the Police Court on Monday morning.
