WORK REFUSED.

RELIEF JOB HOLD-UP. POLICE' PRESENCE RESENTED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Most of the men in the party relief workers engaged in restoring Rapaki Road, Cashmere Hills, refused to start work to-day. Rumours of trouble on the job were current yesterday, and when tlio men reached St. Martin's tram terminus this morning they found a party of about 20 police there. The men objected to the presence of the police, but climbed the hill on the way to the job. At the top of the hill they held a meeting and decided that they would refuse work while the police were present. There are 400 men employed 011 the job, and only 30 or 40 commenced work yesterday. This afternoon a deputation from the men waited 011 Mr. R. T. Bailey, officer in charge of the Labour Bureau, and asked that the police be withdrawn. They were told the police would be withdrawn when the Department thought advisable and that the men who failed to report for work would be regarded as voluntarily unemployed.
