GERMAN CONSUL.

AUCKLAND RECEPTION.

ADVICE TO NATIONALS.

Members of the Auckland German Club on Saturday night tendered a reception to Dr. R. Asmis, Consul-General for Germany in Australia, New Zealand and Samoa, and Mrs. Asmis. The National Anthems of Britain and Germany were sung, after which the guests were addressed in German by the president, Mr. A. R. Leuschke, and in English by Mr. E. T. Armstrong, on behalf of the British members. Dr. Asmis replied in German. Musical items were contributed by the club's string quartet, and German folk songs were sung.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Asmis stated that he generally had to deal with three groups of people, German nationals, British, subjects of German blood, and German clubs. To the first group he could say only, after the unprecedented success of the new German Government, that it was their absolute duty to stand firmly behind the two great leaders of the German nation, President von Hindenburg and Chancellor Hitler. The second group, above all, should be loyal to their adopted country. That, however, would be no bar to being also a good German at heart. The duty of the third group, if they wanted to be worthy of the title "German Club," was to encourage and keep up German customs, German feeling and German language. However, the duty of all three groups was also to cultivate and further good relationship, friendship and co-operation between the British and the German people.

After visiting places of interest in Auckland yesterday, Dr. and Mrs. Asmis left for the Waitomo caves.
