YOUTH DROWNED.
SEIZED WITH CRAMP?
FRIEND ATTEMPTS RESCUE.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PUKEIvOHE, this day. While bathing with a companion at the old mill dam near Patuniahoe yesterday afternoon, a 10-year-old boy, Ivanhoe Harold Baigent, collapsed and was drowned. He was the elder eon of Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Baigent, of Patumalio* .• A younger companion who was swimming with him, Ronald Coutts, aged 12 j years, attempted to brini his friend to the bank,' but failed. He immediately ran for assistance, and hi>3 sister Iris returned with him and dived for the body. Artificial respiration was tried, but all efforts proved unavailing. Both the boys were good swimmers, and it is thought that Baigent was seized with cramp. He had swum! across the pool, which is only a small one', and was returning when he called out that lie was "crone." If he had swum a few feet further he would have been in shallow water. The pool is a small one, having been used some time ago as a dam in order to give a head of water for the generating of electricity for a sawmill. It is situated about a quarter.of.a mile below the Patumahoe railway station. At an-inquest this afternoon a verdict of accidental drowning was returned.
