DISASTROUS FOG.
Electric Train Wrecked on Midland Line. TWENTY PEOPLE INJURED. LONDON, January 2. In the dense fog which enveloped London and SOOO square miles of country in the south, south-eastern and midland counties, an electric train on the Midland line left the rails between Chalk Farm and Fuston and two coaches were telescoped. Twenty people were injured. The first that was known was a sudden crash, followed by a blinding flash from the line. Rescuers, without lights to guide them, carried the injured from the wrecked cars. Men and women were shouting and screaming. The driver was seriously injured. He was found beneath the wreckage. At Hyde Park Corner —the busiest spot in London —the electric traffic signals could not be seen and carbide flares were substituted. Bus traffic was practically at a standstill in many suburbs.
Other vehicles were guided by pedes trians holding flares or torches.
A man with a whito handkerchief pinned on his back led a long column of traffic in Highgate.
