MURDER CHARGE.
FURTHER REMAND. PROTEST BY COUNSEL. WANTS HEARING DATE XIXED. Although the sitting was held at nine o'clock this morning, there wae a large crowd present in the Police Court when William Alfred Bayly, aged 2S, farmer, was charged with murdering Christobel Lakey at Ruawaro on or about October 15 last. Again Bayly was the first prisoner called, and when he appeared DetectiveSergeant O'Sullivan asked for a remand until January 10. The application drew comment from Mr. R. B. Lusk, who appeared for Bayly. "In view of the fact that it is three months since the body of Mrs. Lakey was found, and over four weeks since the arrest of accused, I think these repeated remands are unreasonable," said Mr. Lusk. "I would like some definite date as to when the hearing will go on."
Mr. Wyvern "Wilson, S.M.: Do you want to go on to-day, Mr. Lusk?
Mr. Lusk: No, but I should like the case to be heard a 6 soon as possible. The Supreme Court opens early in February, and the sessions. are getting very near. "I don't think you will be prejudiced in that direction," said the magistrate. Bayly was remanded until next Wednesday, and, after leaning over the dock and speaking a few words to his counsel, he walked back to the prisoner's room.
