GOLD PURCHASES.
Nearly 75,000,000 Dollars in U.S. And Abroad. TRADERS WAIT ON CONGRESS. 4\f (Received 3 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 2. The price quoted for the purchase of gold is unchanged to-day as the Reconstruction Finance Corporation revealed that foreign purchases so far exceeded 50,000,000 and domestic purchases 24,800,000 dollars. Business on all markets was quiet to-day, traders apparently wishing to await the opening of Congress before making large commitments'. " Stock exchange prices showed early strength, but fell off slightly in late selling. Commodities generally were firm. The , dollar showed mild weakness, dropping a few points, which were later regained. Sterling and the franc were practically, unchanged in early trading.
