STORM BREWING.
CANADIAN TITLES. Suggested Restoration Hotly Opposed. MR. BENNETT CRITICISED. (United r.A.-Electric Telegraph-Copyright) (Received 3 p.m.) OTTAWA, January 2. The proposal for the granting of New Year honours by the King to Canadians on the recommendation of the. Prime Minister, Mr. It. B. Bennett, regardless of the opposing resolution? which was carried by the Canadian House of Commons iu 1919, threatens to cause a storm when the House of Commons meets on January 2.3.
Mr. Mackenzie King, the Opposition Leader, to-day attacked Mr. Bennett's action as an affront to Parliament. The restoration of titles, he declared, was a rash and unjust attempt to create in Canada a social order based on titular distinctions..
A message from Ottawa dated January 1 stated that recommendations had been made that certain Canadians should share in the New Year list "of honours, and that awards should be bestowed by His Majesty, according to a statement by the Prime Minister. Mr. Bennett recalled his -statement in the House of Commons last session, in which he held that the 1919 resolution against titles did not restrict the Royal prerogative.
