LOANS ON PAWN.
£1,5,00,000 SWINDLE. Municipal Concession in Bayonne. FARMED OUT TO POLE. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 10.30 a.m.) LQXDON, January 1. The Paris correspondent of the "Financial Times" states that a swindle - involving £1,500,000, has been revealed in connection with the Bayonne municipal pawnbroking establishment, a concession in connection with which was unknowingly farmed out to a Pole. The Pole kept a double set of books, one of which greatly magnified the loans. Counterfoils were secretly transmitted to Paris and negotiated as bills for fictitious values. A Paris message states that the Banque Credit Municipal of Bayonne has closed its doors following the arrest of a director named Tissier.
