N.Z. TENNIS TITLES.

DYMOND BEATS BARTLEET.

SEAY AND MALFROY IN FORM. TWO AUCKLAND DOUBLES LOSE. i . (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. The New Zealand tennis championships opened at Wilding Part on Saturday in perfect weather. The courts were in excellent order. No surprises occurred during the day, but particular interest centred in the play of the Australians, C. Sproule and C. J. Donohoe, and E. D. Andrews, holder of the singles title, and C. Malfroy, none of whom experienced any difficulty winning his matches. The unexpected occurred when Miss J. Ramsay and Mrs. E. Napier, the Auckland representative doubles pair, were easily beaten in the second round of the women's doubles by the hard-hitting Canterbury pair, Mrs. B. Carl and Miss B. Gould. The Canterbury players lost only three games in two sets. The contests were continued to-day in dull, warm weather and in the presence of nearly 2000 spectators. The most important result of the day was the defeat of E. L. Bartleet, the seeded Auckland player, in the second round of the men's singles by H. Dymond, a promising young Christchurcli player. It was a thrilling five-set match, with Dymond too speedy for his opponent. Another spectacular match was that in which Seay and Malfroy, holders of the doubles title, defeated Andrews and J. N. Lowry in three fast sets, full of delightful tennis and fluctuating fortune. Seay and Malfroy will be particularly hard to dispose of by any pair. Bartleet and Sturt were unexpectedly beaten in the doubles by Dymond and Rhodes-Williams, but the other results followed form, and the leading competitors, including both the Australians, Sproule and Donohoe, are left to fight matters out, with the prospects very open. Sproule meets Angas on Wednesday morning, and a great match should be witnessed. Later results: — MEN'S SINGLES.
