TWO CENTURIES IN ONE GAME. BRADMAN STILL GOING STRONG. SYDNEY, January 1. In a Sheffield Shield cricket match begun on Saturday New South Wales met Queensland. The latter, batting fir,st, played a dour innings all day and stumps were drawn with the score at 254 for six wickets (Cook 24, Andrews 38. Thompson 92. Levy 45, Allen, not out, 32). Queensland's first innings closed to-day for 372 (Allen 86, Oxenham 51). Hill took three wickets for 51. Howell one for 79, Chilvers two for 95, Chipperfield two for 88. New South Wales in their first innings lost two wickets for 291 (Brown 50, Fingleton 40, Bradman not out 122, Kippax not out 66). In a Sheffield Shield match in Melbourne, Victoria, playing against South Australia, made 291 for seven wickets (Ponsford, run out. 94, O'Brien 24, Bromley, not out. 101, Barnett 22). To-day Victoria completed their first innings for 366 (Bromley 161). Wall took four wickets for 64. Collins one for 42, Tobin two for 78, Grimniett one for 76. South Australia (with 313 in their first innings) made 198 in their Becond (Lonergan 100, Grimmett 301. McC'ormick took one wicket for 55, Ebeling two for 45, Fleetwood-Smith four for 46 and Ironmonger one for 40.
EAWKE CtTP. TARANAKI V. POVERTY BAT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. The Taranaki representative cricket team to-day commenced its first match in defence of the newly-acquired Hawke Cup at Pukeruru Park, the challengers being a strong Poverty Bay eleven. There was bright sunshine and a perfect wicket. Poverty Bay batted first and made 224. Taranaki had scored 113 for two wickets when stumps were drawn. Scores :— POVERTY BAT.—First Innings. An interesting gsime of cricket was witnessed at the Abattoirs ground at Otahubu on Saturday, when a team of Returned Soldiers drawn from all the clubs met a stronj team "selected from the rest. Playing against a team representing all India and including five Europeans the Marylebone cricketers in their first innings made 330 (Walters 67, Jardine 40, Townsend .69, Verity 91 not out). Town- . send and Verity added 142 for the ninth . wicket. India in the first innings made 151 for seven wickets (Bose 38, Singh 37 not out).
