ELEVEN WINNERS.

TRAINER'S ACHIEVEMENT. TAKANINI STABLE'S SUCCESS. The best performance on record at a metropolitan trotting meeting in the Dominion was made at the Auckland meeting which ended at Alexandra Park on Saturday. During the three days the Takanini trainer, F. J. Smith, supplied no less than 11 winners, four seconds and live thirds, driving ten of the winners himself. In stake money the horses from the stable earned £1995, after deducting 5 per cent stakes tax. A gold cup valued at £50 was also won. The horses and their earnings were:— Nell Volo (three wins), £550 and gold cup valued at £50; Pegaway (two wins and one third), £455; Kewpie's Guy (one win), £265; Chancellor (one win and one second), £260; Worthy Light (one win and two thirds), £140; Rare Rey (one win and a third), £130; Anita Fame (one win and one second), £125; Kuini (one win and one third), £115; Worthy Chief (two seconds), £60. The stakes tax is included in the amounts credited the individual horses.

The only liorsss Smith raced at the meeting which did not win money were Little Guy and Mazda.

Smith's performance is for a three days' meeting, but probably the greatest record at any trotting meeting in the Dominion was put up by W. Orange on November 23, 1907, on the occasion of the Otahuhu Trotting Club's spring meeting. Races were just as hard to win then as to-day, and the programme comprised six events for trotters or pacers and two races for ponies (gallopers). Orange did not have a ride or drive in the first event, nor in the pony races, but he won all five races in which he took part. The Class Trot he won with Waitekauri, with Lady Love and Robex in the places. He then scored in the trotting handicap with Donnizetti, with lago and Harold Huon filling the places. The Otahuhu Spring Handicap Orange won with Happy, being followed home by Huon Leaf and Black Diamond; and with Waitekauri he also won the Telephone Trot, Colenso and Miss Wilson being second and third, respectively. The concluding event, the Panmure Trot, he won with Nat Gould, from Wilhelmina and lago. However, in this race lago actually finished first, but was disqualified for jostling, an' 1 the race awarded to Nat Gould. Orange, therefore, either rode or drove five winners in which must be a Dominion.
