NEAR DROWNING.

BOY SWIMMING TO SHORE. ABAXDOXED CAXOE. Two boys, Llovd Walker and Gavin Pritchard, were rescued from the sea at Eastern Beach on Sunday afternoon while trying to swim ashore from a canoe in which they were adrift. The boys had taken the canoe for a short cruise, but a strong off-shore wind took them about- a quarter of a mile out. to sea. Unable to make headway against the wind and sea, which was very choppy, the boys decided to abandon the craft and swim shore. The boys' plight was seen from the beach, and two men put off in a dinghy to pick them up. When the dinghy reached them Walker was on the point of collapse, and Mr. H. Taylor, of Ponscnby, one of the men in the dinghy, had to dive overboard to rescue him. He was unconscious when brought ashore, but soon revived under treatment. The canoe drifted away out of sight.
