"THE MERRY WIDOW."
To-night at S. also on Monday afternoon, and until Friday next, the J. C. Williamson New Comic Opera Company will appear at His Majesty's Theatre in a production of Franz Lehar's charming comic opera, " The Merry Widow.." It owes its success to its musical numbers, including the " Merry Widow " waltz and the soprano solo, " Villia "; to its romantic story, its comedy scenes, its dialogue, its picturesque settings, dresses, and costumes, and to its delightful ballets. Miss Koinola Hansen, who plays the role of Sonia, has appeared successfully in this part in Sydney and Melbourne. At 'different periods the role has been played by Carrie Moore, the late Florence Young, and Minnie Love. Treryert Browne s tenor voice should be heard at its best in the tuneful music allotted to the character of Viscount de Joiidon. Miss Stella Collier, who plays the part of Natalie, possesses a. soprano voice of exceptional quality. Phil Smith has amused Aueklanders with his Baron Popolr, and Don Nicol, in the part of Niscli. Is said to be at his best. Eric Bush, the talented young Auckland-born t>ai'ltune, will present his characterisation of Prince Danilo. Miss Lois Green will appear as Frou-Frou, l)oris Hopkins as Praskovia, Oliver Peacock as Caseacra, C'iiarles Albert as Novikovitch, and Leah -Miller as Fi-Fi. Features.of the production arc the ballets and dances. "The Merry Widow " will be staged for a limited number of performances, and will be followed by " Wildflower " and " Florodora."
