PLUNKET SHIELD.
Auckland Batting at Wellington. 114 for One Wicket. —Whitelaw and Vivian Going Well.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
Bright sunshine, with a fresh northerly, were the conditions for the commencement of the Auckland-Wellington Plunket Shield match at the Basin Reserve this morning. Postles was fortunate in winning the toss from James, allowing Auckland first use of a batsman's wicket, with a fast outfield. Whitelaw and Poetics opened against Crook, who bowled down the wind, and Blundell. Using good strokes all round the wicket, both batsmen kept the score moving steadily, runs coining in even time. Postles turned the last ball of Blundell's first over to leg for the first boundary. At 22 Newman relieved Crook (none for 11), and the lefthander kept the batsmen quiet, an occasional ball rising sharply. Snicking Newman to the fence, Postles reached 20 after 40 minutes. After bowling four overs, including two maidens, Xewman changed ends, replacing Blundell (none for 1G in nine overs). The change proved effective, Postles snicking the fourth ball to James' reliable hands. Th.e retiring batsman had shaped soundly, batting for 50 minutes and hitting three fours. 40 —I—2l.1—21. Vivian came next, and after playing a few balls he opened his account with a beautiful cover drive to the ropes off Newman. At noon the score was 4!) for one wicket. Scores: — AUCKLAND—First Innings. Postles, c James, b Newman 21 Whitelaw, not out 41 Vivian, not out - 42 Extras 7 Total for one wicket 114
