SWIMMING.
AUSTRALIANS IN SOUTH. I N.Z. GIRLS FOR EMPIRE GAMES? (By Telegraph.—Press Assoclaticn.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Two New Zealand records were equalled at a swimming carnival at Lower Hutt this evening. In the 50 yards women s handicap Frances Bult, the Australian champion, covered the distance in 29 seconds, and in the 50 yards Wellington Centre championship, W. Cameron (Lyall Bay) equalled the New Zealand record of 24 2-5 seconds. The Australian lady swimmers will return to Sydney by the Wanganella tomorrow. In an interview Mrs. M. Chambers, chaperon of the team, said it was hoped that in the near future there would be a regular exchange of visits between the champions of Australia and the Dominion. She advocated the formation of a AVomen s Swimming Association as the best means of improving the standard of swimming among young women. Mrs. Chambers said she was satisfied that the three Auckland girls, Mona Leydon, Barbara Lewin and Edna Rainey. we're worthy of being sent to next year's British games. The times quoted above were as received from the Press Association. It would appear, however, that the Dominion record for women swimmers over fifty yards is 28 2-5s put up some years ago by Ena Stockley. This was beaten by Sylvia Grange on November 28 of this year, the North Shore girl returning 28s dead for the distance. • Unfortunately, the record cannot be recognised, as the race happened to be a handicap event. Then, on December 7, Frances Bult equalled the record, also at Auckland, when the Victorian beat Miss Grange in a fifty yards invitation scratch race at the second of the Waitemata Swimming Club's international carnivals.
