LABOURER'S THEFT.
WENT ON BRINKING BOUT.
Two charges of stealing money and a cheque of a total value of £31 3/4 were brought against James Rayne Brown, a farm labourer, aged 45, before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court this morning. Accused pleaded guilty.
Detective-Sergeant O'Sullivan said accused had been employed by a Mrs. Sweetman at Te Uku on January 6 last. He told his employer that he wanted some money to go into the township. His employer told, him to go up to the house and get what money he required from her purse. He took £11 3/ and went jnto the township and got on a drinking bout. On the second charge he had been given a cheque to pay a bill, but ho had cashed it and spent the money on drink. He had one previous conviction.
Brown stated lie had been given the cheque to pay into a bank account.
When arrested accused had £8 6/2 of the money in his possession. He was remanded until to-morrow morning, the probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, to see his employer in the meantime.
