Mr. W. Grounds arrived by the «k----press this morning from South,

Mr. R. Ferner, Mayor of Mount Albert, returned from. Wellington this morning.

Mr. Ernest Davis has been elected chairman of the Northern Steamship Co. in place of the late Mr. A- B. Roberton.

Mr. J. Stanton, city solicitor, and Mr. A. D. Mead, waterworks engineer for the City Council, returned from Wellington this morning.

Mr. M. J. Moodabe, governing director of Amalgamated Theatres, New Zealand, Limited, left yesterday for Palmerston North and Wellington.

Dr. H. W. Strong, research chemist on the staff of Imperial Chemical Industries, Limited, in Australia, returned to Sydney by the Wanganclla to-day.

Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, Mayor of Devonport, returned this morning from Wellington, where he has been observing the progress of the Waikato Water BilL

Mr. C. Waugh, superintendent engineer of the Huddart-Parker Line, who has been on a short business visit to New Zealand, left by the Wanganella to-day.

Sir Edwin Mitchelson, M.L.C., of Auckland, was yesterday granted leave by the Legislative Council for the remainder of the session on account of illness.

The Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, was last evening appointed one of the Auckland City Sinking Funds Commissioners in place of the late Sir Alfred Baukart.

Mr. R. E. diamptaloup, touring manager of the Automobile Association, left to-day on a tour of inspection of roads in the Rotorua, Taupo and National Park districts.

Mr. D. L. J. Clayton, general manager of the Kauri Timber Company, left on a short holiday visit to Sydney by the Wanganella to-day. He was accompanied by Mrs. Clayton.

Mr. S. Hollander, the well-known Rugby referee, who has been living in Auckland for five months, has been transferred to Christchurch, and leaves for the South by train on Sunday.

Mr. John F. Ewen was appointed treasurer, with Mr. E. A. Craig, of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Association and Mr. Colin R. Munro was appointed to the executive at yesterday's meeting.

Mr. D. McLaren, who has been actingworkshops. foreman for the Auckland City Council since the retirement of Mr. D. J. Wlielan, has been appointed to tha permanent charge of the council's workshops, with the title of superintendent.
