THEFT CHARGE.
MAORI FINED AT PTTKEKOHE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) PUKEKOHE, Thursday. In tie Pukekohe Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. !F. H. Levien, S.M., Black Puru, a Maori, was charged jvith the theft of an axe valued at 9/ tad a wedge valued at 2/, from an island in the Waikato River. Sergeant J. I. Cowan stated that the police were searching another island in the Waikato River for stolen property when they found the axe and the wedge. Accused strenuously denied any knowledge of the theft at first, but later admitted that he had found the articles lying on the ground. Thinking that they had been lost by someone, he had taken them away. Mr. Foster, who appeared for accused, held that the taking of tl j articles did not constitute theft, as accused had hardly had an opportunity to find the owner of the articles. Accused was fined £1 *nd costa.
