RIFLE SHOOTING.

PENROSE FEATURES

NATIONAL PROGRAMME OUT,

Both local clubs fired at 200 and 300 yards ou Saturday. Although conditions appeared to be favourable the scores, for the most part, were not outstanding. H. Simmonds, for City, made 47's, and won first place for his club on the day. In the shoot to complete the first trophy series G. G. Kelly, who carried a 48 from 400, made the season's highest score for Penrose by making another 48 at 300 yards. Kelly has shot consistently well this year, and averages over 92. Although he looks dangerous in the battle for the championship, it is doubtful if he can keep up his present form.

E. J. Reston put up a good shoot at 200 yards with 48, and followed with 44 at 300. Reston is a fine rifleman, who has slipped in form during the la6t season or two. His shooting on Saturday indicates that he is still an effective unit for Akarana.

A. G. Robertson, of City, seems at last to have found the cause of his poor scores, and has turned in two really good short range cards of 02 and 93. Robertson has, in the past, been regarded as a first-class shot at the short and middle ranges.

Walter Colquhoun, of Akarana, is steadily improving, and should be in good order for the association meeting in Auckland on January 20.

Some of Akarana B section men are getting good hits at the first range. On Saturday E. Holmes and A. Richardson made 40, but all faded away on the 300 yards range.

The National programme is out and the events will be fired on Trentham range from March 7 to 10. Over £1000 is offered for prize money, and the matches should draw a heavy entry. So far the local men have not given definite indications of entry, but probably Syd Elliott and R. Wakefield will represent Akarana, and Simmonds, Russell, Clark, Bowes and Kelly will enter the lists for City.
