SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

Miss Dorothy Mills, of Birkenhead, who leaves for England next week, was farewelled last evening at a social tendered by the Birkenhead Women's Association.

A number of Karaka and Papakura friends gave Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Colquhoun a house warming, when a very pleasant evening was. spent in dancing to. music "gathered from, the air," also a number of jolly games were played. At supper Mr. Leg Grant conveyed the hest wishes of the company to the young couple, who were . accorded musical honours.

Mrs. Carolyn Forsyth, who has been renewing old friendships and associations in different parts of the North Island, returned to Auckland, and prior to her departure for Sydney she entertained a number of her friends at the Tudor tea rooms. Among those present were Mesdames Cecil Swallow, Ben Wilson (Wellington), Knowles, Watkin, Parsons, Misses Jessie Wilson, Gillibrand (2), Herbert, Clark and Hathaway.

An invitation recital was given in the Penwomen's Club rooms on Wednesday evening by the adult students of Mrs. Culford Bell and Mrs. Herbert Bloy, assisted by Mr. Denis Sheard. A varied programme of costume sketches and piano and violin solos was presented to an appreciative audience. Vocal solos were- most artistically rendered by Mr. Sheard. The clubroom was tastefully decorated with carnations and eweet peas, and supper concluded a very enjoyable evening.

A large gathering of Foresters and members ' of the Rebekah Lodges attended a tennis dance held by Court Maid Marian ladies' section of the Ancient Order of Foresters, in the Foresters'.Hall, Albert Street, recently. All the visitors were received and cordially welcomed "by the Chief Banger, Sister E.. G. Harvey. Many popular dances were enjoyed,' the music being supplied by Sister Leece. Bro. A. Law, accompanied by Mrs. Law, contributed two songs to the evening's entertainment.. During the course of proceedings, Bro. Stych presented her P.C.R. honours 'to Sister- D. Mead, who was also the recipient of a charming bouquet of flowers from Sister S. Gubb. * *■ ■* *

An enjoyable social evening was spent on Wednesday in the Grey Lynn Bowling Club's pavilion, when the Richmond Rovers' Football Club held another of its . successful and popular five hundred card tournaments. Prizes were won by the following: Mrs. Laing and Mrs. Chas. Williams; Mr. F. Kerr and Mr. R. Lamb. The combined prize was won by Mr. F. Kerr, the hidden number by Mr. G. Bell, and the consolation byMrs. Dick and Miss L. May. Among those present were: Mesdames W. Burke, C._Verrall, C. Williams, G. Bell, Davis, Farmer, Reith, Grey, Sanders, Reaney, Dick, Laing, Bryant, Ellis, Kerr, Cossar, Ellice, House, Mincham, May, Moore, Jones, Engel, Palmer, C. Young, Sullivan, Milicich, Morrow, and Soffe, and Misses C. Dick, M. Ashby, M. Grey, D. Robinson, J. Dick, and L. May.

The Y.W.C.A. Overseas Club held a most successful Christmas party on Wednesday,, when over 100 wore present. Among other guests were the helpers for Sunday night sing-song, the service committee and 15 girls from the Unemployment Bureau. The evening was a fancy dress one and the grand parade revealed many novel costumes. The girls from the bureau recei-ved special commendation for the originality and variety of costumes. Their Christmas pudding won a prize, while special mention was accorded other representations. "The Bathroom" won the prize for the best carried out costume, the second being a page boy. A brown, paper parcel carried off honours for the least expensive parb, the second being "Biscuits," a garment that combined effective design with cheapness. The judges were Mesdames H. Kasper, H. Keven and T. Clark, and were accorded thanks at the end of the evening by Miss Meleta Tdylor, the president of the Overseas Club. . A comic sketch, singing and games comprised-the main programme. Supper was served at 10 o'clock, three club girls who had come of age this year. being asked to officiate at the'cutting and serving of the hand-soinely-iccd cake.

Tlio final gathering for the year of the Northcote Women's Progressive League was held in the Parish Hall yesterday afternoon. Mrs. A. Campbell presided. Regret was expressed that the secretary, Mrs. A. Taylor, was unable to attend owing to continued illness, and at the illness of Mrs. A. E. Greenslade, one of the original members. The secretarial duties were undertaken by Mrs. D. P. O'Leary. An enjoyable programme included songs by Miss Sarah Stacpoole, Mesdames T. McKnight and V. P. Searletti, pianoforte selections by Miss Pearl George, and sketches from Dickens' works by Mrs. Kenneth Gordon. The accompaniments were played by Miss Ruby Gifford and Miss Pearl George. Bouquets made by Mesdames A. Campbell, F. Maxwell, and J. L. Hanna were presented to the performers. • • • •

The last meeting for the year of the Northcote Plunket committee was largely attended. The president, Mrs. A. Campbell, welcomed Miss Lynn Court back from her trip to Australia. The com-mittee-is to go into recess until February, and on February 15' a bridge evening is to be held to raise funds to permit of the" continued ' provision of KaritaSic products to babies iu eases where the father is out of employment. A vote of thanks was accorded the honorary drivers, Mesdames N. J. Campbell, M. H. Campbell, R. Sterling, R. C. Morley, Misses Lynn Court, Jean Stewart, Myrtle Lepper, and B. Edwards, through whose good offices the Plunket nurse, was enabled.to visit the honies at Birkenhead and Northcote. It was agreed to assist the Northcote Welfare League in its efforts to raise funds, and to become responsible for a stall at the fair to be held in March next.
