MARRIED WOMEN.
CITY CO UNCI If EMPLOYMENT.
Whether or not a resolution concerning the employment of married women, passed by the Auckland City Council in October, was retrospective in its operation was a question which came before the council from the library committee at the council meeting last evening.
The resolution in question read aa follows: —"That in order to spread employment in these days of stress it shall be the policy of the council not to give employment" to any woman whose husband is in permanent employment except with the consent of the council."
The Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, moved a resolution making it clear that the resolution was intended to apply to persons in the employ of the council at the time it was passed, as well as t6 any fresh appointments.
Mr. Donaldson contended that the resolution was meant to be retrospective.
Mr. A. J. Entrican said that from'the wording of the resolution, it could refer only to employees taken on in the future.
After further brief comment, an amendment by Mr. T. Bloodworth thatthe resolution should apply only to .new appointments was carried. '
