TOWN HALL A GARDEN. "'
The gorgeous summer colourings of masses of hydrangeas, gladioli, ?weet peas and other Mowers set out in formal beds for the Auckland •Horticultural Society's summer flower show W« transferred the Town Hall into a natural garden.
Designed and laid out hv the society's honorary architect, Mr. H. L. Mas'sev the flowers are set in formal brick bordered beds, and pre the impression of growing naturally in their setting The stage is a blaze of colour. It has been decorated by the courtesy 0 f QS Auckland City Council, under the supervision of the superintendent of rjarira Mr. T. S. Aldridgo. Mr. G. J. Fillmore assistant superintendent of parks' arranged the flowers, which are mainly from the Domain gardens. Sweet pea? form the base of the display, which is built up with gladoli, iris, and Christmas lilies. An archway over the stair 3 leading to the stage lias been covered in pink roses.
A special bed has been laid out by the head gardener of Sir Edwin Mitchelson Japanese hydrangeas arid iris in beau-tifully-toned colours of pink and blue have been worked into the general plan of the bed, and the effect is one of 1 artistic colour blending. Another fhie individual display is that of the Auckland Gladioli Club, who have arranged some very fine specimens of gladioli" to form a colourful exhibit.
The secretary of the Auckland Horticultural Society, Mr. Nelson C. Pierce said that the 3UO entries were the best the society had ever had. They were more than double the number received for last summer's show.
The show was opened by Mrs. W". H. Parkes at 1.30 p.m., and it will be open to the public this evening and to-mor-row, closing ori Friday at 9 o'clock. Prize awards were :— GLADIOLI.
