RELIEF WORK CONTROL.

DEVONFORT'S STRONG PROTEST. Strong objection was expressed by Devonport Borough councillors when the circular from the Unemployment Board, proposing that the local representative of the board should have complete control of works undertaken by No. 5 scheme relief workers in local body districts, was read. The opinion was expressed that a dictatorship would be created which would be definitely against the best interest of the borough. A telegram is to be sent to the Mayor, Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, who is in Wellington, stating that the council considers that it is in a better position to judge what is the best work in the borough, and asking that the Mayor pass the objection on to the Minister of Employment, the Hon. A. Hamilton. The deputyMa vor, Mr. E. IT. Little, said that tho Minister had told Mr. Meikle that he was entirely satisfied with the work as controlled by tho council. It therefore came as a surprise to find that an attempt was being made to establish a dictatorship over all No. 5 works.

A resolution was also passed regretting the tendency of the Unemployment Board to establish a bureaucratic control of the unemployed labour in the borough.
