COSTLY ENTERTAINING.
GOVERNOR AND liORD MAYOR. Early announcement of the appointment of a new Governor of Victoria is expected. It is known that difficulty is beingexperienced in reaching finality (says the "Melbourne Star"). The salary of the Governor is £5000 a year, but next year, being centenary year, the occupant of the position will be called on to spend far more than his salary in his capacity as host —to spend money on a scale unprecedented in Victoria. Moreover, the Governor in all probability will act as host to a member of the Royal Family next year. It is stated that on this account, more than ordinary interest was being taken in the appointment by the King. In the absence of the Lord Mayor, Mr. H. Gengoult Smith, the city council fixed the Lord Mayoral allowance for 1033-34 at £3500. .This is £1500 more than the amount last year. The chairman of the finance committee said that the council realised that the centenary would make exceptional claims on the purse of the Lord Mayor.
