The verb "swap," meaning "to strike." and the adverb derived from it, are obsolete. The origin is presumed to have been onomatopoeic. The first record of the use of the word in English was in the middle of the fourteenth eentury. The origin of the verb "swap" (or swop), meaning "to exchange," has not been traced. The usage did. not come into the written language until the last quarter of the eighteenth century. '
