CHECKING IMPORTS.
TARIFF REVISION. DATE STILL UNCERTAIN. ANNOUNCEMENT SOUGHT. On the ground that the anticipated revision of the Xew Zealand tariff is checking the flow of imports to the Dominion, the Auckland Chamber of Commerce has written to the Minister of Customs again asking when the report of the Tariff Commission is to be considered and given effect by Parliament. The chamber in its letter states that at a recent meeting of its. executive discussion took place on the uncertainty affecting imports, on account of the tariff revision and the extent.to which the volume of imports will be curtailed in anticipation of tariff reductions next year. Any factor in the curtailment of imparts was likely to increase the Government's problem with regard to funds accumulating in the banks in London.
The executive considered it would -be helpful if an early announcement could be made as to when the report of the. commission is likely to be available and when Parliament was likely to meet to deal with it.
Tn the course of discussion it was mentioned that the recent reports from Wellington indicated that Parliament would not meet until about the middle of the year, by which time an important part of the importing'year had passed.
