NO INQUIRY NEEDED.

WAIHI MINE MISHAP. WELLINGTON, this day. No public inquiry into the circumstances ,of the Wailii mine accident 011 July 20 last is necessary, according to a statement made in the House yesterday by the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, Minister of Mines. _ Mr. Macmillan stated that the question had been raised at the time by the Under-Secretary of Mines, but in view of the exhaustive investigation which was held, no good reason appeared to exist for holding a public inquiry. The cause of the accident was investigated by the chief inspector of machinery, the inspector of machinery, the inspecting engineer of mines and the inspector of mines. As a result remedial measures were immediately taken, and everything possible had been done to prevent a recurrence of' the accident. The mishap, the Minister added, could not be attributed to any breach of the law.
