SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The weekly meeting of the new Women's Club was held in the club room on Friday afternoon, when an article written by Mrs. S. Irwin on the life of John Law was read. The account of his meteoric career in the world of finance was taken from the writings of the French historian Henri Martin. An interesting comparison was drawn by the members in the ensuing discussion, between John Law's methods of finance in 1718 and those of the present day and of the exponents of the new economics.

An afternoon party was given last Saturday at the residence of Mrs. Agnes Snow, Rangitoto Avenue, Remuera, the occasion being the coming of age of her elder daughter Patricia. Mrs. Snow, wearing red crepe de chine, received the many guests and relatives. Miss Patricia Snow, who wore pink satin, was the recipient of many gifts. The centre of attraction was the tea table with its pretty decorations of roses, carnations and larkspur, and the pink and white iced cake, surmounted by the golden key of freedom, on which the friends assembled signed their names.

Mrs. Mark Levene, of FranKlin Road, gave a very pleasant evening recently in honour of Miss D. Agnew. The guest of honour was the recipient of useful and pretty gifts. Musical items were given by Miss L. Moore and Miss M. Levene. Amongst those present were: Mrs. A. Levin, Misses M. Goodman, S. Moore, L. Moore, R. Agnew, O. Ramsey, A. Courtney, J. Bond, D. Hill, M. Daley, J. Smeale, M. Galagher, S. Rogers, O. Reed, A. Stevenson, K. Ryan, J. Summerhays.

A touch of humour was supplied by a band of young people at the Plunket fete on Saturday afternoon, when, dressed in the fashion of the gay 'nineties, they strolled about the lawns in the approved manner. Those taking part in the tableaux were: Mrs. A. E. Moore, Misses Edna Stratton, Natalie Stratton, Pauline Crewe, Molly Goodwin, Helen Seabrook, Pat Grayson, Tory Johnson, Esther Jones, Molly Noton, Gwen Buchanan, Messrs. Sam Overton, John Cooke, Manning, Matthew Stratton, Terry Roy lance, John Carpenter, Skeak, Geof. Leslie, John Gray, Felix Hally, Eric Brown.

Mrs. A- Turner, convener for the house committee of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women, held a party at her home in Birdwood Cressent, Parnell, yesterday afternoon _to raise money for council funds. During the afternoon members of the committee, dressed as witches, gave an item entitled "Witches of Lancaster." Songs were given by Mrs. Hugh Kasper, Mrs. F. H. Hobday, Miss Josie Heath Preest and Misses G. and H. McCallum. A violin solo was played by Miss Vera Dewing. In her duties as hostess Mrs. Turner was assisted by Mrs. Heath Preest, Mrs. McNair, Mrs. Charles Dickens, Mrs. N. Neilsen, Mrs. M. Dewing, and Mrs. T. Winks, and Miss M. H. Baggett. The rooms were delightfully decorated for the occasion with masses of roses. Among those present were: Mrs. A. D. Campbell, Mrs. G. Chewing, Mrs. A. F. L. Mitchell, Mrs. G. Gribbin, Mrs. A. A.
