WAITANGI.
SIGNING OF TREATY. ANNIVERSARY IN FEBRUARY. IMPROVED ROAD ACCESS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANG ARE I, this day. The 100 th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi falls on February 6, 1934, and the Public Works Department is making every effort to provide proper access to Waitangi in anticipation of the large assembly expected for the ceremony. Metal for the road is being obtained from two scoria quarries, and by the end of this week about three miles will have been laid. . Culverts have been repaired, but two bridges erected about 50 years ago have been somewhat affected by the extra traffic in connection with the works in progress.
A new bridge is to be erected across the mouth of the river, though some people desired it to be above the falls, so as not to block the waterway. Information is to hand that about 20 men are engaged on the construction of the bridge, and the work is being pushed ahead. In addition, the road approach on the Pailiia side is being constructed, the road going about two chains from the beach and across the Maori reserve, round the Treaty House on to the bridge approach.
Work is also proceeding on the renovation of the old British Residency, and on the estate improvements are being effected as rapidly as possible. Graders, scoops and ploughs are being used in the making of roadways to all places of interest.
