TOWN SENSATION.
MAN IN LOIN CLOTH.
STREET SCENE IN HAWERA,
FARM LABOURER'S ORATION.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAWERA, this day. Wearing only a loincloth of sack and with his body smeared with ashes, a young man caused a sensation in High Street, Hawera, yesterday at mid-day. The town was crowded with visitors for the Jubilee Show, and the man, as lie stood on the corner of Victoria and High Streets shouting a religious address, attracted a large gallery. The man was first seen at the back of business premises, where he apparently undressed. An employee saw him pick up a piece of sacking and burn some paper, smearing himself with ashes. He attempted to prevent him from going into the street, but was unable to do so. He walked along High j'Street to Victoria Street, and there I commenced his address. A traffic injspeetor persuaded him to move round jthe corner into Victoria Street, and there he recommenced his exhortation. Policemen arrived, and led the speaker into a taxi.
The man, who is held in custody, is a farm labourer and has been under observation for some time.
