A HIKE OF 700 MILES.

Carrying a 3SIb pack on his back containing his tent, blankets, camping equipment'and spare clothes, Tom Whitford, 27, of Sydney, walked into Melbourne on October 23, having completed nearly 700 miles by the Prince's Highway in 37 walking days. He averaged approximately ISA miles a clay. He was undecided then whether to walk on to Adelaide or return to Sydney. "When I lost my employment three months ago," he said, "I reckoned I would be better off seeing the country than spending my savings in the city. I do not regret the experience, and feel more fit and tough than when I left. Unless I pick up employment in the meantime I intend to keep on walking." He spent a day in Bairnsdale and was held up for two days by rain. The journey cost him £5. Throughout the trip lie subsisted on a vegetarian diet. Whitforcl is a teetotaller and nonsmoker. Passing motorists frequently offered him lifts, but he refused them all.
