SOME RECORD.
America's Boy Jockey Aims At 388 Winners. There is a crack jockey in the States who, for sheer "colour," has Gordon Richards stone cold, states a London critic. He is 10-year-old Jack Westrope, described as "a pug-nosed, freckle-faced, blonde-haired, ninety-six-pound riding fool." Jackie has left the 200 winners mark well behind this reason, and is headed for a record —not the easy Archer record of 240 which we hope Gordon will beat, but W. Miller's tally of 388, which was registered in the States in 1906. On no fewer than nine occasions American jockeys have ridden more than 250 winners in a season. Miller rode 334 in the year following his record, and Vincent Powers had 324 successes in 1008.
We must not, however, reckon Archer and Richards as small beer in comparison with the knights of the pigskin across the Atlantic. There is no close season for fiat racing in America, and jockeys have from January 1 to December 31 in which to pile up the points.
Reference to Master Jackie Westrope would not be complete without stating that he was born in Montana, began to ride when ho was two, likes good music, but not cards.
