THE CHIVALRY OF HEMUS.
The recent death of Mr. L. G. ("Chummy") Hemus has recalled several incidents of interest in his cricket career. On one occasion he was playing in an Auckland side at Wellington which contained several colts. One of them, in playing forward, missed the ball. The Wellington keeper, an ex-Australian, held on to the ball, and when the batsman in trying to recover, lifted his heel, took the 'jails off and successfully appealed for stumping. Once again in that innings the same sort of thing happened. It was all quite within the rules of the game. I When the wicket-keeper was batting Hemus was on bowling. The ex-Aus-, tralian in backing up was going over the crease. Hemus came up as if to bowl the ball, the batsman left his crease, only to discover that the ball was still in the bowler's hand and close to the bails. But Hemus did not break the wicket. Thati was not his way of playing the game. J
