ENGLISH CRICKET.
Hammond Top of the Batting For the First Time. The full, list of the English cricket averages for last season, now to hand, shows that Walter Hammond topped the list, for the first time in his career, with an aggregate of 3323 and average of 67.S for 54 innings. At that he was only a fraction above Mead. Verity (190 wickets) finished at the top of the bowling list with an average of 13.4, followed by Freeman with a bag of 29S wickets and an average of 15.2. C. C. Dacre is BCth on the batting list with an aggregate of 1377 and an average of 27.5. Among the all-rounders, James Langridge is 39th on the batting list (aggregate 1578, average 37.5) and fourth on the bowling list (158 wickets, average 10.5); E. H. Bowley is 56th batsman (aggregate 1538, average 34.9) and 41st bowler (39 wickets, average 25.4), and A. Wensley is 120 th batsman (aggregate 811, average 23.1) and 40th bowler (126 wickets, average 25). Hammond, Ames, and Hendren were the only batsmen to top 3000 runs for the season, and the 2000 men were: Mead, Wyatt, A. Mitchell, Leyland, C. F. Walters, Sutcliffe, Bakewell, Jno. Langridge, Kilner, Townsend, O'Connor, Nichol, N. F. Armstrong, Keeton, Barnett, and Gibbons. Freeman was the only bowler to take over 200 wickets, the nearest to his 298 being Verity with 190. Maurice Tate missed his 100 wickets by one, and he had a poor batting season, making only 325 runs.
