Several Surprises.

Some Solid Dividends Paid During the Day. The meeting opened with the Trial Hurdles, for which Unoco, Patutahi, Euby Meteor, Valpeen and Domo were withdrawn, and most' money came for Riotous and Wee Pat, the latter winning easily. Thespis oegan smartly and led over the first fence from Coachman, Carlaris and Wee Pat, and passing the stand the order was Thespis, Coachman, Wee Pat and Carlaris, with Riotous next; then came Makhill and Glenade. Riotous ran up second along the back, with Wee Pat handy, and crossing the" top Thespis and Riotous were on terms, with Wee Pat and Carlaris next, with Makhill last. After jumping the second to last fence Wee Pat ran up on the inside and led into the straight from Riotous and Thespis, on terms, next; then came Carlaris, several lengths away. Wee Pat went on to score easily by six lengths from Carlaris, with Riotous threequarters of a length away. Thespis, who screwed badly at the last fence, was fourth, .Collowed by Glenade and Coachman. Makhill fell at the final hurdle. - An Easy Victory. When the field paraded for the Great Northern Guineas, Alignment, Catalogue, Porotiti and Coronis were absent, and Gay Sheila was the popular fancy, with Sea Fox and King Musk next in request. D'Artagnan, Gay Sheila and King Musk were first to show up, Gay Sheila taking charge along the back from King Musk, Sea Fox, D'Artagnan, Tavern Knight and Palm Queen. King Musk dropped back a little further on, and Sea Fox ran up second to Gay Sheila, the last pair being attended across the top by Tavern Knight, Spiral and D'Artagnan. Gay Sheila was first round the home turn f'rom Tavern Knight, Sea Pox, Spiral and D'Artagnan; with.' Musquil, King Musk and Palm Queen following. Sea Fox challenged Gay Sheila half way down the straight, but had no. chance of catching the Takaninitrained filly, who won by three lengths, with Spiral a neck away third. Musquil, Tavern Knight, D'Artagnan; Palm Queen and King Musk were next. The sectional times were as follow: First furlong 14 2-ss, two in 2S 1.55, three in 38 2-ss, four in 51s and five in 1.4. Backed and Leads All the Way. Hampton Park was the only defection in the Shorts Handicap, and" most money was invested on Puss Moth, Tradesman and Porotiti. Puss Moth, Porotiti and Exaggeration began best and the first two led across the top, on terms, from L'Allegro, Pomp and Tradesman, with Exaggeration, Quietly and United following. The order was the same into the straight, where Puss Moth drew out and won easily by two lengths and a half from L'Allegro, who beat Porotiti by one length and a half. Exaggeration was fourth, then came Pomp, Tradesman, United and Quietly. Outsider Wins Mitch'elson. Havering, Lord Val and Gold Trial were withdrawn from the Mitchelson Cup and in a good betting race View Halloo, King's Knave and Prince Val got most support. Carfex led out of the straight from Speedmint, Baroscope, King March and All Humbug, with View Halloo, Prince Val, King's Knave, Allegretto, Royal Artist, Free Air and Red Sun. Carfex and Speedmint were still in front along the back from Baroscope, King March and View Halloo, then came All Humbug, Prince Val and King's Knave, and the first three showed the way across the top from Allegretto, All Humbug, King March, View Halloo and Royal Artist. Turning for home the order was Carfex, Speedmint and Baroscope, then came Allegretto and Prince Val. Baroscope stayed on best in the run home to win by a long neck from View Halloo, who finished strongly to heat Speedmint by a length and a half for second place. Carfex was fourth, then came Prince Val. Red Sun, All Humhug, Royal Artist, Desert Star, Allegretto, King's Knave, King March and Free Air. The sectional times were: First four furlongs 555, five furlongs 1.10, six furlongs 1.23 2-5, seven furlongs 1.37, one mile 1.50 2-5, and nine furlongs in 2.4.

Surprise in Steeples. Ruby Meteor and Taha were withdrawn from the Hunters' Steeplechase and Valpeen, Count Lendroff and Zane Grey carried the bulk of the investments. As they raced along the back the first time Count Lend roll had charge from Loom, Valpeen, Creina's King and Zane Grey. Valpeen led over thi double attended by Count Lendroff, Creina's Kins:, Loom, Hauwai, Xane Grev, Grant's Opal and Bamba. Going up the hill the last tune Count Lendroff began to tire, and Valpeen drew away, the pair being followed by Creina's King, Zane Grey and Hauwai. Valpeen led down the hill-from Creina's King, Zane Grey, Hauwai and

Grant's Opal and the order into the straight was Zane Grey, Valpeen and Hauwai. Once over the last fence Hauwai challenged the leaders and got up to win by a long neck from Valpeen, with Zane Grey 2-J lengths away. Grant's Opal, Creina's King and Loom were next, with Count Lendroff and Bamba some distance away. Hot Favourite Beaten. The defections in the Welcome Stakes Mere Pound Sterling, Sporting Song, Gay Blonde and Bed Flame. Whemiakura was made a hot favourite, carrying £082 on the win machine and £.'lO4 on the place machine while Mother Superior, the second fancy, carried SS and 191 respectively. Mother Superior went out fast from Gay Egypt and Whemiakura, showing the way across the top to Sirona, Royal Appellant, Waitaka and General Quex. Gay Egypt . and WJienuakura turned for home on terms with Sirona and Mother Superior well clear of Royal Appellant and Waitaka. Half-way down the straight, Gay Egypt and the favourite were having a great tussle, when Mother Superior came fast on the outside and headed Whemiakura. Voitre then shook the favourite up and he responded in good style, but failed to overhaul Mother Superior bydtf|*kead. Gay Kgypt was two and a hJdMefi|ths away. Then followed Appellant, Waitaka and General Quex.

A Big Dividend. There were 10 withdrawals from the Gordon Handicap and when betting ceased Hushing, Royal Gallant and Good Run were the popular fancies. Hawthorne broke through the barrier and dislodged his rider before the start, but when the field was dispatched he was first out, but soon gave way to Alpinus, the pair being attended by Senegal, Hushing, Holly Lu, Woodful and Bugle Call. Alpinus and Woodful were on terms across the top from Good Run, Royal Gallant, Senegal; Hushing and Holly Lu. Entering the straight Alpinus was showing the way to Good Run, Woodful, Supreme Ruler, Royal Gallant and Hushing, but he tired over the final stages and Bugle Call came fast from the back to win by three-quarters of a length- from Good Run, with Alpinus a length away. Hushing was fourth, then followed Woodful, Supreme Ruler, Gay Broney, Hawthorn, Royal Gallant, Holly Lu, Senegal and Echo Song. Outsider Wins Flying. Chief Cook, Kiltowyn and King's Archer were in demand in the Flying Handicap, but an outsider in Mungatoon won and paid over a score. When they were let go Greek Gold, Karangapai, Chief Cook and Kiltowyn were the early leaders, the order across the top being Greek Gold, Karangapai, Eastertime, Kiltowyn and Chief Cook, then came Mungatoon, King's Archer and Gay Marigold. Karangapai led into the straight, with Eastei-time and Mungatoon handy, followed by Greek Gold and King's Archer. In the run home Mungatoon finished on solidly and won by three-quarters of a length from Kiltowyn, who beat Gay Marigold by a head. Eastertime was fourth, followed by Chief Cook. Karangapai, Greek Gold and King's Archer.
