REFUND OF RATES.
PROPERTY REVALUATION. OPOTrKI BOROUGH INSTANCE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) OPOTIKI, this day. Methods adopted by the Valuation Department caused expressions of surprise at last night's meeting of the Borough Council, when a letter was received from the Mayor, Mr. G. S. Moody, asking for a refund of rates j which had been paid under protest.
Mr. Moody appealed against the valuation of his property, which was £1190, unimproved valuation, at a sitting of the Assessment Court in Gisborne, and the valuation was reduced to £265.
This reduction caused complete astonishment to a majority of the council, members asking what methods were adopted in valuing property.
Mr. Patterson asked what would be the cost of having another revaluation of the borough made.
The solicitor, Mr. Hodgson, said about £50.
Mr. Patterson: Well, the sooner we have a revaluation the better.
A decision in the matter was held over until next meeting of the council.
