SHOP ASSISTANTS.
PROPOSALS FOR AWARD. A conciliation council, presided over by Mr. P. Hally, met yesterday to consider proposals made by the employers in respect to wages and conditions of shop assistants other than grocers. The employers' assessors were Messrs. H. G. Thompson, T. Clark, J. W. Kealey and L. O'Malley, and the workers' Miss L. Purcell and Messrs. G. W. Dilley, A. Greenman and T. H. Phillips. Mr. W. E. Anderson, secretary of the Employers' Association, acted as employers' agent. A general discussion took place on the various clauses, but owing to an endeavour being made to arrange _ a settlement of the dispute on a Dominion basis, the council was adjourned until after a meeting to be held in Wellington on November 9. Prior to the commencement of the business Mr. Anderson was congratulated by all parties on his appointment as secretary of the Employers' Association.
