Novia Scotia's Annapolis Valley, famous now for its apples, as long ago as 1849 made its first shipment of apples to England. In that year 400 barrels were sent to Liverpool. The business did not attain consequence until the 'eighties, when faster ships and improved refrigeration made the movement of 'fruit over the Atlantic both practicable and profitable. Now hundreds of thousands of barrels are shipped annually.
