The • Henderson Town Board held its monthly meeting on Wednesday night, Mr. H. Norcross presiding. Mr. W. A. Corban was welcomed as a new member by the chairman and other members of the board. •
The foreman reported that improvement work had been done on the Sturgess, Edmonton and Valley Roads, all water meters had been read, and the retaining wall iu the Falls Park had been completed. A letter from the superintendent of the Henderson Volunteer Fire Brigade suggested that a member of the brigade should be present at all large gatherings held in the Town Hall to assist iin guarding against fire. The suggestion was agreed to unanimously. The town clerk of Newmarket wrote requesting that a meeting of the western suburbs local bodies be held to discuss the Auckland City Council's water charges. This was agreed to, and the date fixed for November 22. The Farmers' Union wrote suggesting that a conference of all local bodies be held to consider the question of unemployment and the manner in which the Government were dealing with it. This was agreed to, the Mayor of Auckland to be requested to act as convenor.
A fancy dress ball was held in the Henderson Town Hall on Wednesday night by the children of the Henderson Public School. The ball was opened by Mr. J. H. Holt, chairman of the school committee, the music was supplied by the school orchestra, under the leadership of Mrs. Livingstone, and the dancing was directed by the headmaster, Mr. Davidson, and his staff. The audience was the largest yet seen in the Town Hall, 400 children and 350 adults being present. The costumes worn by the children were remarkable for their brilliancy of colour, variety of design, and the various countries and periods in history which tbey represented. Folk dancing was done by the primers, and prizes were won by Colin Lowe, R. Hudson, R. Steele. Jovce Steele, B. Morrison, T. Jeffries, _T. Fuller, N. Estich, M. Corban, Marjorie Lowe, E. Dickens. E. Baker, D. Murphy, Muriel Banks, D. and J. Craig, and special prizes were awarded to L. Fuller and M. Banks. The judges for the various competitions were provided by the proprietor of Lily Elsie's Bridal Shop. A dainty supper served to the children concluded a very enjoyable entertainment.
