THE DRAINAGE SCHEME.
There is a good deal to be said for the resolution > carried by the Harbour Board this week urging the Drainage Board to proceed immediately with the scheme for Greater Auckland drawn up by its engineer. As the custodians of the harbour the Harbour Board has an excellent right to press this matter, for the pollution of waters near the city by th* present discharge is admitted. By putting the hew works in hand immediately the Drainage Board would shorten the life of the present outfall, and provide.,for a large number of men work of a class against which no objection could be raised. This drainage improvement will have to be carried out some day soon, and if it is put in hand now it will ease unemployment. There must, however, be agreement between the parties, or at any rate the principal ones, before a beginning is made. At present certain criticisms of the scheme advanced by the City Engineer are under consideration.' Mr. Tyler accepts the main lines of Mr. Watkins' scheme, but questions certain features of the administrative portion of his report, and raises doubts about the outfall at Brown's Island. These differences are not vital, and there should be little difficulty in adjusting them.
